Changing Your Skincare This Winter

As summer comes to an end, and with the winter winds slowly coming in, the skincare routine that, one follows in summer needs to be tweaked according to the season. Your skin becomes susceptible to the harsh winter air, which sucks the moisture out of the skin and makes it appear dull and lifeless. The best way to combat these problems is by making new adjustments in your skin care routine and completely overhauling of your skincare products. Here are some of the ways you can do that.
Drink water: All of us must’ve heard it a million times that drinking water is essential for a healthy skin. It is specially true during winter when your skin is stripped of its moisture. Drinking water helps rejuvenate the moisture in your dry skin and gives it a natural and healthy glow. Avoid drinking too much caffeinated drinks, especially soda, which has a lot of sugar. And sugar has been known to speed up the ageing process of the dry winter skin.

Switch from your foaming cleansers to an oil-based cleansers: This might come as a shock, but it’s not only oily skin that is prone to acne and breakouts. People with dry and harsh skin are equally likely to get acne because dry skin means cracks in the outer layer of skin due to loss of hydration, which ultimately leads to inflammation causing breakouts. So, before you remove your makeup or just simply want to cleanse your bare face, make sure you use an oil-based cleanser which is rather gentle on the skin and won’t strip off your skin’s natural oils like the foaming cleanser. This will keep your skin supple and hydrated and lets you avoid any sort of dryness and itchiness in the skin. You can use foaming cleanser after your cream cleanser.

Get rid of your physical exfoliates: While exfoliating is a great way to get rid of impurities and dead skin cells on your skin, physical exfoliants like scrubs and granules may be a bit too harsh on your skin during winter and cause more dryness. So, the best option is to use chemical exfoliants like AHAs and BHAs which are rather kind on your skin.

Change how you moisturize: Switch to a rather heavy moisturizer than the ones you use in summer and by that, I mean not to one that contains too much oil but to one that contains essences like fatty acids, ceramides and retinols that help you regain your skins moisture and prevent possible dryness, wrinkles and itchiness.

Don’t forget face oils: People generally tend to think that using face oils will cause them to have skin breakouts, especially if they have oily skin. But in reality, face oils are an essential part of a good skin care routine that is ideal for all skin types. Face oils like tea tree oil, camelia oil, rose hip oil and lavender oils could never go wrong.

Sunscreens are everything: Just because you barely see the sun in winter doesn’t mean its effects are not getting to your skin. Apply an ideal sunscreen for your skin type that can protect it from UVA and UVB rays and also prevent early ageing.

Eye creams: Using eye cream is the most important beauty regime considering the fact that the skin around our eyes are softer compared to other parts of our face and body, and that is where we first start seeing signs of wrinkles. During the winter, dry and puffy eyes, if not taken care of, can get worse over time and simply applying a moisturizer won’t do. Using products with antioxidants, peptides and elastin is a great choice. So invest in a good eye cream comprising these products which last a long time and boost the collagen and hydration in your eyes to prevent early ageing.
In addition, don’t forget to take care of your body and use moisturizers daily to keep it from itching and developing conditions like psoriasis and eczema, which are especially prevalent during winter.
