Challenging Tastes At Sun Cafe

WE FOUND OURSELVES in Sun Café, which feels like a cosy place to be. The décor of the café incorporated modern settings with traditional Mithila wall art, and a spacious setup. Now, the thing we looked to be impressed by was, of course, the food! There’s nothing more satisfying than a wonderful meal when your hunger reaches its peak.

We started out with a Grilled Chicken Sandwich, which was a wonderful dish to have started with. Taking the unconventional route, and ditching the traditional bread for the sandwich, they used Pita bread, which to be honest, was lighter and easier on the tummy. Personally, I’d give a thumbs up to the sandwich and would probably go for another one some time in the future. It’s quite an achievement making a good sandwich, choosing all the right elements to compliment each other, the right bread to not overpower each bite and the right spread. While the grilled chicken, tomatoes, onions and shredded lettuce are the essentials to this sandwich, it was the bread and spread that made it what it was. The Pita bread with the mayonnaise spread didn’t overpower the other elements and didn’t shadow over the meat. Adding all these elements together plus costing Rs 230, the sandwich itself was almost a light snack, and if it’s light, it’s good!

The second dish to arrive was the ‘Chatamari Style Minced Chicken and Egg’ Fusion Pizza! With this fusion of Newari and Italian cuisine, priced at Rs 650, it made us ever so impatient to taste and truth be told, we could’ve had a bit more delight to it. The pizza was a unique taste in all honesty, certainly not for the usual taste-buds of pizza lovers or binge eaters! It was sweet, even amilo a few times, but savory. The Chatamari Pizza, for a newar, gives you high hopes, wanting to find a hint of the typical newari spice that I’m used to, despite the savory element of the cheese overpowered it. Everyone knows the taste of chatamaris, the merger of different delicious flavors, and digging into the pizza we did expect most of the same flavours. Even now I have mixed feelings about this pizza, I would frankly suggest you treat yourself to an adventure with this one, because a personal opinion on something quite unorthodox would be the best way to tackle it. I would say this was a unique experience that I’m not likely to forget any time soon.

They ended the service with their Chicken Hazarvi kebab. It’s always a wish to end one’s food adventure with something of a ‘cherry on top’ experience, but priced at Rs 400 it didn't miss the mark. Traditionally, hazarvi kebabs incorporate processed cheese in the recipe, but seeing the kebab that was brought to us it was startling to see the cheese wrapping the meat instead. The amount of cheese that was in the
dish added the glory of the boneless chicken meat which was the main kebab. The actual meat of the kebab was still succulent behind the blanket of cheese. An added squeeze of lemon juice had much to do to accentuate the taste of the kebab, and did manage to add an extra element of zing to it! Even as a fan of hazarvi kebabs, this dish wasn’t the usual hazarvi that we imagined, but we were treated to what was an unusual mismatch.

Now about the overall experience we had at Sun Café, it is certainly a place I would like to have another go at, and so should you!
