Too Much Social Media?

SOCIAL MEDIA HAS drastically evolved over the past years and has had various impacts in the everyday lives of people. From a simple connectivity tool to an all-powerful source of information, social media has become an extremely important aspect of our lives. From everyday folk to business companies, everyone has adapted to using social media in one way or the other. It has become such an integral part of our lives that even growing children have seemingly incorporated it into their daily lives.

Children are quite impressionable. That is a very well-known fact. The world around them is vast and they constantly take in information from their surroundings and process it accordingly. Social media is one such source of their information. It has become a crucial tool to the next generation. They are in the stage of their lives where they have to not just learn how to survive in the world out there but also to create a social placeholder of themselves on the Internet.

With so many impressionable youth viewing a great many influencing content via social media, it can be hard for them to figure out what is good, bad or required for them. Seeing people live life in a certain way, doing certain things with a specific approach can most definitely get the youth questioning themselves, “Is that how ‘I’ should do things?”, “Is that the way to attain success in society?”. This way they are met with unrealistic expectations of how they should live, act, dress, eat, behave, etc. Generally, every growing individual wants to feel relevant and be known well amongst their peers. Individuals will often try their level best to emulate their peers and par-take in similar activities that are popular. The same can be seen on Social Media as well. They do not wish be left out and when they are unable to keep up with the trends and the ongoing style, they tend to develop a ‘fear of missing out’which can turn into something potentially dangerous for them in the long run. There is a high chance that they might be consumed by the enchantment of Social Media and be lost as individuals from the real world.

Just as everything else, Social Media too has its Pros and Cons. As intelligent members of the society, we owe it to ourselves to identify the problems that arise with its Cons and also take it upon ourselves to try our best to tackle them. One of the possible methods can be occasional detox from Social Media applications. Involving oneself in physical activity such as sports to lift one’s spirits. Taking up a hobby such as arts and crafts, music, cooking, reading, etc. Talking to your peers or elders about any issues. These could be helpful ways to detox and not be overwhelmed from the adverse effect of Social Media usage.

There are many ways to nullify the negative effects that come with Social Media. We just have to look for them a little bit harder and just try. In today’s day and age where every child-teenageradult has access to all the information available to them at a moment’s notice, let us try to utilize it in a positive way that improves the life of a person physically and mentally.
