In-house hotel restaurants do not need to be expensive to serve great quality food. A perfect example is Kimbu Restaurant at Hotel Mulberry in Thamel.

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the crowded streets yet centrally located in the heart of one of Kathmandu’s best places to be – Thamel – is Hotel Mulberry. Many of us might know this hotel for its rooftop infinity pool, but it is not the only pearl in the hotel’s necklace, Its another pearl is Kimbu Restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of the hotel, and is home to some of the finest delicacies in the city.

Kimbu Restaurant is a multi-cuisine restaurant that believes in catering to its customers luscious food in a serene ambiance. The restaurant has an indoor as well as an outdoor eating space. Whilst the outdoor area has a porch area and a small-size garden surrounded by beautiful plant pots, the indoor area is beautifully floored and is decorated with a contemporary touch.

Although the price here aren’t the cheapest in town, they are way less compared to the prices at comparable in-house hotel restaurants. Even so, each dish is served good portions, which is often enough to share with friends, let alone fill one’s stomach.

Surf and Turf

One of Kimbu’s best main course dishes Surf and Turf, is a perfect combination of seafood and red meat. The dish comes with a base of garlic mash topped with layers of beef steak and jumbo prawns, and is served with sautéed vegetables on the side. Since both meat pieces have been grilled to a perfect level and glazed with red wine, the dish is a true delight to the eyes. Having said that, the dish is no less of a delight to the taste buds.  It truly is a must-try meal. The dish is served with a special knife that makes it really easy to cut through the meat, thus making the experience of eating the dish even better.

 Spaghetti Carbonara

Served with a side of grated parmesan cheese and some chili flakes, Hotel Mulberry’s Spaghetti Carbonara has an incredibly rich texture and taste. The pasta I served with just the right amount of sauce that balances the flavor of cheese with the taste of pasta. The spaghetti also has more than ample amount of chopped bacon in it. Nevertheless, the pork bits don’t dominate the dish. The dish is topped with some basil leaves that show that it is an Italian cuisine. Additionally, the pasta is served with two slices of toasted garlic bread, which taste absolutely great.

Chicken Nepali Thali Set

The Nepali Thali has a really colorful look to it because of the use of various different colored vegetables. Mulberry’s Thali comes with a dome-shaped rice center, and is surrounded by a number of side dishes. The Thali comes with thick black lentil soup topped with a whole chili. There are three types of the curry: a seasonal spinach curry, a mixed vegetable curry, and chicken curry. While the chicken curry had light gravy, the other two were completely dry. And the chicken was perfectly cooked tender, juicy, and full of flavors. The other side items included green salad, tomato pickle, papad, and curd. These curries are a burst of spices and flavors, but ultimately that’s what Nepali food is all about.

Chocolate Truffle Cake

The Chocolate Truffle Cake is as good as it can get. The cake is a thin sponge base topped with a thick layer of chocolate ganache and sprinkles of chocolate chips. The ganache is very fresh and doesn’t have the heavy and greasy texture, which makes the dessert light for the stomach, but strong enough for taste buds. The game changer, however, is the way it is presented. The cake comes in a plate decorated with chocolate powder and nuts.
