While certain types of teas have fat melting properties, they cannot be solely relied for on for losing weight. Drinking such types of tea needs to be accompanied by a strict diet and exercise.

Tea has been a part of Nepali culture for generations, and now with the increased awareness of physical fitness among people, it is often asked whether drinking tea could also lead to weight loss. While tea is famous for its unique anti oxidative and fat melting properties, it is still unclear whether solely drinking tea can help us lose weight. We recently met with Krishna Bhandari from Healthy Home in Jamal to learn more about the connection between tea and weight loss.

Healthy Home has been working on body shaping and weight loss since over decade by offering various packages—depending on the body-mass indices and the level of fat of its clients—that work on melting fat in the body. While most of its weight loss programs require clients visit the clinic, its unique High Fiber and Tea Diet can be undertaken at home.

“As many Nepalese have a sedentary lifestyle, obesity is rising to become an important health problem. Obesity is linked to various medical conditions like high blood pressure, sugar, thyroid and even joint pain, and Nepal lacks specialty clinics that deal specifically with obesity. Healthy Home is here to fill in that gap, and take the responsibility of catering to body shaping and weight loss through our numerous programs,” said Krishna.

He added, “While tea does have fat melting properties, one cannot solely rely on drinking tea for weight loss. Yes, tea could help in losing a small amount of weight, but it needs to be followed by a strict diet. In our Herbal Fiber and Tea Diet, for example, we provide various type of teas that need to be taken at different times of the day and that need to be paired with a diet chart that we provide. You need to pair your tea with salads and fruits instead of carbs, so that your stomach is filled, fats are melted, and nutritious meal prevents weakness.”

Healthy Home’s High Fiber and Tea Diet include three types of tested teas that need to be carefully paired with their diet chart. The morning tea is responsible for burning the excess body fat, the afternoon tea is for suppressing hunger and providing sufficient nutrition, and the night tea is for the removal of toxins extracted from fats, and cleansing of unnecessary calories.

When paired with a proper diet, it is said that tea helps burn fat, and detoxify the body by preventing the buildup of fat in the intestine with its cleansing properties. But we also need to be conscious of our body conditions as well. “For some, the only area with excess fat might be their belly, but some might simply have a bigger body size while still having low amount of fat. For people with high cholesterol and high fat, tea plays a good role in weight loss—especially green tea. But then again, there have been cases where too much consumption of green tea has caused low pressure and fainting in people with thin blood.”

While the debate is on whether tea in general is effective in weight loss, studies have proven that some specific teas do help in losing weight. Here is a list of a few of those useful teas:

 1.    Green Tea

Green tea is linked with various health benefits, weight loss being one of them. The anti-oxidative compounds present in green tea blasts fatty tissue by revving the metabolism and increasing the release of fat from fat cells especially in the belly. It also speeds up the liver’s fat burning capacity. According to research done by professionals, combining regular green tea drinking with exercise maximizes the weight loss benefits.

2.    Black Tea

Black tea is the type of tea that has undergone the most oxidation. Studies have shown that drinking three cups of black tea each day for three months has resulted in a significant weight loss and reduced waist circumference in people.

4.    Oolong Tea

A traditional Chinese tea that has been partially oxidized, Oolong tea is often described to have a fruity and fragrant aroma with a unique flavor. The high level of antioxidants hinders the body’s ability to absorb fat by twenty percent.

5.    Lemon Tea

All thanks to its d-limonene content, lemon tea can help fight your bloat. The compound has been used for its diuretic effect since ancient times.

6.    Mint Tea

While certain scents trigger your hunger, others can actually suppress your appetite. The scent of green tea is said to avert the munchies. A study published in the Journal of Neurological and Orthopedic Medicine showed that people who sniffed peppermint every two hours lost an average of five pounds a month.
