"Dandruff is a condition in which dead skin cells on your scalp flake off, often landing on your shoulders and clothing". We mostly feel embarrassed about having dandruff. Is there any way to get rid of it? What are the solutions?

  1. How does one get dandruff?

Dry skin/scalp are the notable causes. Also, if you are not shampooing your hair enough, you are more prone to it. It is annoying and sometimes embarrassing. When you don't shampoo your hair, oil accumulates and builds upon the skin f. Some people have a medical condition like psoriasis causing the problem.

  1. Why do we get it, especially in winter?

Let me correct it! You get dandruff in all the seasons if you are to get it. However, in winter, the air is dry. Your scalp gets dry as well. Therefore, it becomes flaky and visible. In summer, your scalp produces oil. Hence, it sticks to the scalp. As a result, it is not flaky to be seen easily as in winters.

  1. People say that it is because of the dry scalp. What causes dry scalp?

Yes, I do! It is not only the reason. But, it is one of them. There are various causes of dry scalp. Except for medical conditions, if you don't drink enough water, take long hot showers, do not massage your hair, or if you live in cold conditions, you might get a dry scalp.

  1. Are there any effects on our health?

Dandruff does not have effects on your health. It might make your hair itchy. It damages your hair follicles causing you to lose hair. It is not contagious but harmless.

  1. Is there any treatment for the problem? If yes, then is it temporary or permanent?

You do have a way out. Let's not say it is a treatment. But, you can get rid of them slowly.

If you have it excessively, you must use hair products containing Salicylic acid.

Shampoo your hair often. If the regular shampoo does not work, consult the dermatologist and use a medicated shampoo.

Home treatment:

Warm the mixture of Olive oil and Coconut oil. You can also add Castor oil. Apply and massage your scalp thoroughly.

Make sure you oil your scalp and not your hair. That way, the oil can reach the hair roots and get moisturized.

Massage for 15-20 minutes (at night) and wash your hair in the morning.

If this does not help, you can use citrus acid. Add lemon to the lukewarm water and after 15-20 minutes, rinse your hair.

  1. We can see lots of anti-dandruff shampoo ads. Do they work?

They work for most people. If the anti-dandruff you are using is proven and registered, they work. Even dermatologists recommend shampoo. So, Yes! You can try them.

  1. Do genetics cause dandruff?

Yes, it could be genetics. Sharing towels amongst the family is not ideal too. You have to make sure that you have a separate towel. In addition to genetics, age and sex also influence the problem.

  1. Have you come across any client with an interesting incident concerning the dandruff problem?

Few years back, I had an old client (75-80 years). He had eczema that caused him excessive dandruff problems. I massaged his hair in a circular motion mixing olive oil and coconut oil. Every week, he would visit for a hair massage. Oil massaging, using his comb, and towel drying his hair helped him get rid of the problem along with medicine.

  1. Do you have any suggestions for people suffering from the problem?

I suggest the use of sulfur-free shampoo. Keep your hair clean, massage your hair roots, eat a healthy diet, drink enough water, get a little sun, and limit hair styling products. Slowly but surely, you will get rid of dandruff problems.
