Demystifying Hyperpigmentation

Dealing with hyperpigmentation can be tough, especially when people around you keep pointing it out. In simple terms, hyperpigmentation is just excess color (melanin) in your skin. With years of experience and first-hand research, I've helped hundreds of clients manage this issue effectively. To tackle it effectively, first, we need to understand it.

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation might sound complicated, but let's break it down. "Hyper" means "too much," and "pigment" refers to the color of our skin. It’s not exactly harmful, but seeing dark patches can be distressing. These spots can show up anywhere, especially on areas exposed to the sun like your face, neck, and hands.

Why Does It Happen?

There isn’t one single cause, but here are a few common reasons for hyperpigmentation, especially among Nepalese people:

  • Sun Exposure: The high altitude and outdoor lifestyle in many parts of Nepal mean more exposure to UV rays, which trigger melanin production.
  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, such as those during pregnancy, can cause dark patches.
  • Unsafe skin creams: Some unsafe skincare or treatment with harsh chemicals can also lead to hyperpigmentation.
  • Genetics: Hyperpigmentation can run in families, making some people more prone to it.

What Can You Do About It?

Treating hyperpigmentation takes time, but topical products with the following ingredients can help:

- Niacinamide: Reduces dark spots and inflammation.

- Diglucosyl Gallic Acid: Reduces abnormal production of melanin (the pigment that causes dark spots).

- AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids):  Exfoliate to reveal new even-toned skin

A Few Tips:

- Be patient. It won’t go away overnight.

- Consult an expert instead of experimenting.

- Always use sunscreen & moisturizer to prevent further darkening.
