So much more than a glass of water.

‘It’s like washing out your insides,’ says DhirajKarki, Nutritionist from Nepal Technical Assistance Group. ‘The water will cleanse the system, fill you up, decrease your caloric load and improve the function of all your tissues.’

He adds thefollowing benefits of loading up your system with adequate water every day.

  •  Maximize the physical performance. Physical performance is mainly a function of an individual’s size, shape, sex and age. Therefore, it very essential for physical fitness.
  • Good for energy levels and brain functions. When the brain is fully hydrated, the exchange of nutrients and toxins will be more efficient. Thus, ensuring better concentration and mental alertness.
  • Best for constipation. Since constipation is related to dehydration in the colon, you need to make sure you are drinking lots of water. When your body is properly hydrated, less water will be withdrawn from the colon. This will keep your stool soft and easy to pass.
  • Water prevent hangover. Have a big glass of water before you start drinking, then try to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic drink that you have over the course of the night. Your body will thank you for it in the morning.
  • Help in weight loss. It is 100% calorie-free, helps you burn more calories and may even suppress your appetite if consumed before meals.  However, keep in mind that you're going to have to do a lot more than just drink water if you need to lose a significant amount of weight.
  • Clearance of toxins/waste materials from body.Water is also essential for delivering nutrients to the brain and for removing toxins. It flushes toxins and waste from the body and transports nutrients to where they are needed. Without water the contents of your colon can dry out and get stuck.
  • Regulate body temperature. Water has a large heat capacity which helps limit changes in body temperature in a warm or a cold environment. Water enables the body to release heat when ambient temperature is higher than body temperature.

Mr. Karki has given a formula to calculate how much water should individuals drink daily according to their weight.

You should multiply your weight by two thirds. For example, if your weight is 99 pounds, you would multiply that by 2/3, and so you should be drinking about 66 ounce of water every day.
