We often hear lots of opinions about sleep. Some of them are true, and most of them are not. Having listened to these, let’s know about some of the facts vs myths about sleep.

 

  1. Myth: Your body gets used to getting less sleep.

Fact!: You will find yourself sleepier during the day if you are sleep-deprived. Your work performance will deescalate and harm productivity, creativity, and focus. 

 

  1. Myth: How long you sleep is all that matters.

Fact!: You need to consider the quality of your sleep with your sleep hours. You have to avoid sleep disruptions.

 

  1. Myth: A good sleeper does not move at night.

Fact: Factors such as aggressive and violent movement or sleepwalking is not normal. However, for healthy and usual sleep, minor movement is considered okay. 

 

  1. Myth: Your brain shuts down during sleep.

Fact!: The way the brain works while you are asleep changes its pattern. However, the brain never shuts down. The shift in brain activity is necessary for your cognitive health.

 

  1. Myth: More sleep is always better.

Fact!: Just like sleeping less is not good, sleeping too much is never healthy. Sleeping too much might be a cause of some underlying health issues. 

 

  1. Myth: Snoring is not harmful.

Fact!: Occasional snoring is not a big issue. Snoring becomes a matter of concern if it is chronic and loud. It can cause obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a breathing disorder. It may cause sleep disturbance and prevents your body from taking in the oxygen the body needs.

 

  1. Myth: Napping makes up for lack of sleep at night.

Fact!: Few minutes of naps can never be a substitute for lack of sleep at night. It might help you get more energetic. Your sleep has different stages. And long naps during the day often make you more sluggish. What can you do? Sleep well during the night!!
