Motion Lighting Your Home
You may have seen it in the movies. A rick guy walks into his house, all the lights suddenly brightens up the place without the person having to turn on the switch. Fancy Stuff, right?
These are called Motion Light Sensors. As the name suggests, they basically use the motion of a person on their field of view and turn on the lights. So, no more having to navigate a dark room to find the switch and stub your toe in the process. These motion lights are ideal for rooms, patio area, and hallways.
These motion light sensors sound fancy and you might think that it must be expensive to set it all up. Well, they aren’t really. Perform a quick search on Hamrobazaaar and Daraz and you’ll notice that these motion sensor lights start from about Rs. 400 NPR all the way up to Rs. 2500 NPR.
While there’s the fancier and the convenient aspect of not having to look for a switch to turn on the lights, these motion sensor lights have a lot of other advantages too.
The major benefit of installing motion lights is that it saves a lot of energy, like a lot. Since the lights only turn on when actually needed, a lot of electricity is saved. You no longer need to check the entire house to see if the kids left the lights on. It’s a lot more energy efficient than other forms of light too. So basically, you pay less and save a lot of energy. This makes a lot of sense in our country where there’s still power outages from time to time. On the other hand, the lifetime of the bulb will also last longer as compared to traditional bulbs. It’s a win-win situation for all.
Also, if you think about it, motion lights also help you protect from burglars and vandalization. Darkness is a burglar’s only friend. A burglar will find it hard to steal your stuff when there are motion light sensors all around the place.
And lastly, there’s the advantage of convenience such as no need for switches, letting out the pets at night, no need to get out the car to turn the garage light on, lighting outdoors easily and so on.
Moving on to the science part. The motion light sensors use infrared waves to detect the motion of a warm object. The warm object may be a person, a pet or a car. After detecting the motion, the light is turned on until the motion sensor detects some form of motion in the room. We can also preset the timer on the light to make it turn on for about 1 - 30 minutes even after there’s no motion. These lights have a semi-circular field of view of 240 degrees and a distance range which can be adjusted. So you don’t need to right underneath the light in order to turn it on.
Installing a Motion Light Sensor is pretty easy. All the lights on the market will come with a handy little guide that’s easy to follow and get your motion lights up and running. Not only is it easier and cheaper, but it also makes your house a tad fancier and futuristic.
