Father has impactful and crucial role in the holistic development of their children. Holistic development refers to child’s growth in all areas: physical, cognitive, emotional, social, spiritual/moral. Throughout history, fathers have been provider and protector but as time is evolving, so the role of father is evolving as an active co-parent. Fathers are encouraged to be equal parenting partners, sharing partnership with mothers in nurturing, educating and responsive care of their children. In Nepalese society, traditionally father has been symbolized as strict, fearful and decision maker but nowadays father has been playing their role as a companion and mentor to their children which is regarded as relevant parenting in today’s world.
Physical Development
Fathers mostly engage in active play, outdoor activities, sports with children which contribute in children’s physical development. Also, father set powerful example to children through proper nutrition, regular exercise and responsible behavior. Fathers are not just providing resources but being role model and involving with their children through physical activities. It can significantly support in physical development of their children which can enhance children’s motor and gross skills, coordination and physical fitness.
Cognitive Development
Studies have shown that father’s involvement has positive impacts in cognitive development of their children. Fathers engage with their children in different ways than mothers do; they frequently promote independence, problem-solving skills, and exploratory behavior, all of which are associated with stronger cognitive development of children. On cognitive tests, children whose fathers participate more in educational activities typically perform betterparticularly in math and problem-solving.
Emotional development
Generally, emotion has been neglected part in father’s role. But recent researches have shown that role of father’s play important role in development of resilience, emotional intelligence, relationship skills and mental wellbeing of their children.
Men don’t cry, it doesn’t suit to see men crying etc. are myth that prevails in our society which misguided in upbringing of children which make them difficult to cope with their emotion in healthy way. Father should not provide only physical needs but should also provide emotional needs of their children like validating their feelings, listening them with empathy. Father’s responsive care to emotional needs of children is crucial in emotional development of their children.
Social Development

As per changing family dynamics, father’s role is vital and irreplaceable in social development of children.

Although both parents make substantial contributions in moral and spiritual development of children, studies reveal that fathers have a special and frequently enduring impact in these areas, particularly through modeling, conversations, methods of discipline, and participation in religious activities. Fathers can influence in moral and spiritual development of their children either by direct teaching or by exhibiting moral behaviors. Fathers help children develop a solid ethical foundation when they discuss virtues like integrity, compassion, responsibility, and faith. Research indicates that when fathers employ reasoning instead of authority, their children are better able to internalize values. In many families, fathers act as "spiritual anchors," reinforcing faith through consistent behavior and action.
