Teaching etiquette: How to do it right

Education is one of the basic infrastructure in the development of a country and along with that a basic necessity for any individual. In the quest of feeding the latest information to the budding mind what we fail to understand is it’s not always “what” a person is being taught but also “how’ he/she is being taught. Classroom etiquette or simply teaching etiquette can be considered as very important aspect of the education system.

Education, where the word has just been confined within the chapters of course book, one needs to understand that anyone can READ what is on the text book but cannot LEARN. Learning has a broader sense. The age-old status quo needs to be broken and the new-found way of teaching and learning should be applied in every education sector.

Let us take you through some of the pointers that can be eye-opening for our education system.

Respect is the utmost priority:

As earlier mentioned, respect can be the most important thing when it comes to teaching or dealing with a child for that matter. If a child feels that he or she is not getting enough respect from his or her teacher, then the child doesn’t pay much heed to the teacher and hence end ups learning nothing at all. So the first thing a teacher needs to make sure is make them feel respected and only then the child will reciprocate the same amount of respect to the teacher.

Feeling of appreciation:

Children are attention seekers. They want to stay around people who value them and give them the attention they want. Along with attention, a child also seeks appreciation. While teaching, the teacher should keep on appreciating the ones who is seemingly not doing well. That is because if a child feels that he is appreciated even when he/she is not doing any better, then he/she will get encouraged to do better and get more appreciation.

Availability of resources/materials:

We have entered into an era of technology where we can get almost everything within a very limited time. So making the best possible use of this advantage, we should definitely include materials in daily curriculum. When the children are taught with the help of materials, they understand better. This is very useful especially for the kindergarten students as they have a keen sense of seeping things in their curious mind.

Application of theoretical knowledge in practical world:

We have been equipped with so many things in this modern world that anything we have learned can be applied practically. So the application of the knowledge in the practical world will help the students to have a better understanding of the things they learnt and they also have a less chance of forgetting about the things that has been taught.

Telling does not equal teaching

When the teacher is prepared to teach in a class he/she needs to be wary about the WAY he/she teaches. Some teachers just go inside the classroom and they start “telling’” what is written inside the text book. That’s not the way to teach someone. What happens here is the child starts losing interest and eventually gives up on learning anything in the class. So the teacher’s way of explaining things, making it interesting and giving the additional information is what makes a child stay interested in the topic.

Explaining- as a wonderful tactic

Both in theoretical and practical subjects, explaining should be done efficiently. If explained properly, the child never forgets anything that he/she has been taught. The teacher can gather additional information, prepare quiz questions to know the prior knowledge of the students or prepare materials that would provide an aid in teaching purposefully.

Ignite curiosity

Curiosity is the most efficient way of developing hunger for knowledge. The teacher must be able to ignite a sense of curiosity in the child. That way, the child will pay attention to quench his/her thirst of knowledge and eventually to find an answer to his/her curiosity. Curiosity can never go wrong with teaching because in order to learn something, the child must be eager to learn and be eager to find out the answers on his/her own.

Teaching is a noble job that should be done with dedication and passion. Educating and shaping the beautiful minds of others is not an easy task. Hence, a teacher must be well-equipped with resources and information in hand. With these things in mind, the education system can definitely do wonders in creating and shaping beautiful young minds.
