Music is a part of my every high and low. When I need a boost of my energy, I immediately gravitate to a “motivation mix” playlist to hype me up. It is the driving force that gives me the extra boost, better sleep, or a burst of motivation when I need it.

Music is a part of some of my happiest and saddest moments. When I am mouthing the lyrics to my new favourite song during a car ride, I am reimbursed with energy. Whereas when it is a gloomy and rainy day, I will always have a “sad playlist” playing in the background. Music is intertwined with my daily life. It brings sentiment and emotions into my life. Music is beyond a hit song or an album to me which I know many people can relate to. How does music improve the quality of my day? Why is my day incomplete without music?

I like music because it is entertaining. It is the perfect accompaniment when I am working out, cleaning or going on a long drive. I love listening to music but the type and time for listening to the music matter. When I am working out, I need a song or playlist that is going to pump me up and give me energy. I like to listen to something like “motivation mix” or “beast mode” on Spotify. When I am dreading working out or being lazy, music saves me and gives me an extra boost. On the other hand, songs that I can jam out to and sing along with are a must for when I am cleaning my room. It pushes me to clean my room and makes it less of a chore. For long drives, I listen to throwback songs so I can rethink all my memories from my childhood. Music is perfect during a long drive. It provides necessary entertainment and stops me from losing my mind without making me car sick.

Music holds so much value to me. It enhances my day. It makes any experience more fun. It can make you more connected with your emotions. When I am feeling sad, I will play some slow songs and just lay in bed. It enhances that moment and makes me feel more connected to my inner thoughts. When I need to focus on a task, I will play some Lofi or relaxing music. I can’t read or write while listening to music like some people can but if I am going through photos or organizing my desktop, I will put on some relaxing music to get me through the task. Sometimes it adds that little exciting moment into my day. Every so often when I get a song that gives me adrenaline, it brightens my day. When I am playing my favourite playlist and a very energetic song comes along, I can’t help but smile and sing along.

Music is also known to have benefits for humans. Not only is it enjoyable to listen to but it can improve creativity, boost energy, improve sleep, increase motivation, and decrease stress according to betterup.com. I know the improving sleep is true because there was this one playlist from my mom’s iPad that I always fell asleep to. During the lockdown, I used to cycle in my backyard while listening to music. Those few moments felt like an escape from reality and helped me calm down and relax.

Music is like therapy to me but it wasn’t always like this for me. When I was nine, I didn’t listen to music regularly. I still liked the music because I remember downloading Taylor Swift’s live performances on my iPad and making playlists of them. It still took me time to start listening to music regularly. When I was in the sixth grade, I had just changed schools and gotten a phone. That is when my music taste started to develop. At first, I would just listen to my cousin's playlist when I went to school but then I started downloading my favourites to make my playlist. From there, I started listening to different genres like rap, country, hip hop, etc. It is like something that you can never go back from. Yes, not listening to music daily was completely fine but once you start doing it, it feels incomplete without it.

Like most teens, I listen to most of my songs on Spotify and YouTube. Spotify is convenient for me because it has many premade playlists from all my favourite genres. There will be a playlist for anything, crying, sleeping, and working out to name some. I also discover many new songs on TikTok. I spend a lot of time when creating a new playlist because I need the right songs so they have the same effect. I need music I can sing along with and enjoy. I also get bored of songs so I am constantly on the hunt for new songs.

Music is entertaining and good for health. It is irreplaceable even if it is just a few lines of lyrics sung in a rhythm. Everyone has valuable memories of music. Whether it be jamming out to it in the car or sleeping to it as a child. What are yours?
