It is a time to relax, feast, laugh together, and enjoy being home. Dashain is here, and if you are wondering what can you do during this break, here is the list.

Never did I realize the cruciality of taking breaks. I guess, there is a reason for every country to have vacation breaks, festivals, and even weekends. No matter how much we love our work, our job, and school, I should say, our mind needs certain days to relax and escape away from hectic life. Living in a multi-cultural country, I couldn’t help but notice how every religion celebrates festivals differently which is not only fun but a way of taking breaks. On top of that, if you are a Hindu, you get extra holidays, especially during Dashain and Tihar. Talking of Dashain, the 10 days of holiday gives you enough time to do a lot of fun activities with family and close ones. You are with the family and relatives, you have time, so rather than just being home, you might as well do something productive that elevates your intellectual level.

If one belongs to a joint family, there are chances for you to be occupied the whole 10 days. However, if you have a small family with not much of relatives, or even if you don’t celebrate Dashain, you might as well make the most out of it. Here, let’s talk about the things you can do during Dashain breaks.

  1. Bamboo swings (Before we run out of bare land)

Swaying high in the Bamboo swings or ‘pings’ comes with a bundle of memories. This can be a great way to bond and interact within the community as well. Bamboo swings make their appearance only during Dashain, so you do not want to miss it. It is believed that swings eliminate any sort of ill emotions and sick sentiments. They say you must leave the ground once so you can have your afterlife in heaven (Of course it is a myth).

  1. Finish your pending work:

This one might not have impressed you. But, hear me out, you don’t have to go to work, you are home all the time, you have some free time, and you have a lot of pending work. Pending works can be unpaid bills, assignments, notes, office work, may be incomplete books and many more. Well, if you utilize this time, you will save yourself from loads of work just after the holiday.

  1. Indulge in indoor games:

Nothing can beat the loudest laugh, “the loser has to wash all the dishes” bet, the moment you are waiting for your turn to claim that you are a winner while playing cards, ‘Antakshiri’ when you only remember 90s songs, the pounding heartbeat during chess, UNO, and many more. These are the moments that hold a special place in our hearts. Lots of fights with your brother as he wouldn’t help you with chores. Indoor games bring the family together and Dashain breaks have to include such.

  1. Learn a new language:

Dashain Break is a great time for you to subside all the regular work, responsibilities, and duties and focus on how you can grow intellectually. The break is where you get to listen to your heart and do something that makes you happy. Whether you are a traveller or not, learning languages never hurts. Being able to speak and understand different languages is a skill that will benefit everyone in a long run. These days, learning languages is easy as you don’t have to attend classes and simply download apps or google them.

Dashain break might have different definitions for everyone. Besides, the tika and blessings, there are much more to the festival. Dashain had started for good reasons, so it should stay and continue for good reasons. Reading this article, what did you remember of Dashain you have celebrated? While I write this, I wonder how much a newly married couple is excited for their first Dashain together. I wonder how excited is a family to be celebrating this Dashain with a newborn baby. I wonder how many parents have been waiting for their children to come back home this Dashain. I wonder how many children couldn’t wait to run back home and hug their parents and feast at home.
