Bread comes in every size, shape and taste, and is in general loved by all.  It is one of the first foods humans learned to prepare eons ago, and continues to remain a staple food in many meals and recipes. Different types of bread are baked differently, the taste invariably depending on the baker’s skill. 

The following are some of the more popular varieties of bread.

  1. Bagel: Bagel is a firm doughnut-shaped bread roll made with yeast dough.  It is rolled, oiled and baked in an oven, which makes them more dense than other kinds of bread. They come in many flavors including, blueberry, and onion.
  1. Baguette: It is a very popular French bread.  Baguette is characterized by its tube-like shape, as well as it crunchy texture with soft interior.  It can be up to two-feet long, and can stand up to substantial fillings, such as salami.
  1. Brioche: A brioche is often served as a breakfast food due to its sweet and rich flavor. It is made by combining yeast with butter and eggs.  It is glazed with an egg wash after it’s been baked. It is usually flavored with almonds.
  1. Ciabatta: Ciabatta is a flat oblong Italian loaf bread, with dense crumbs and a very hard and crisp crust. It is made with wheat and often added with different spices, and dusted with flour when it comes out of the oven. It is very frequently in making sandwiches.
  1. Croissants: Croissant is a French roll, which is flaky, buttery with a very rich texture, and has the shape of a crescent moon.  It is baked in layers with puff pastry and yeast dough. Traditionally, it is considered a breakfast pastry, often served with coffee. The chocolate croissant is a popular variety.
  1. Garlic bread: It is basically any type of bread toasted and spread with some crushed garlic in melted butter. It complements many other dishes.
  1. Multi-grain: Multi-grain bread is prepared with five types of full seeds usually barley, flax, oat, millet and wheat. Its dietary fiber contents is  up to four times greater than that of white bread.
  1. Pretzels: Pretzel is a long, thin piece of bread that is shaped like a loose knot. It is normally sweet and salty.
  1. Rye: Rye bread has a deep, hearty flavor with a unique compact and chewy texture.  It is made with rye flour, because of which its color can range from light to dark based on the amount of fiber. Because rye bread flavor is strong, you want to pair rye breads with strong-flavored fillings.
  1. Sourdough: Sourdough has a slightly tangy texture and has a sour taste. It typically has a crispy outer crust and a softer, crumbier interior.  It tastes better when complemented with a sweet ingredient, is usually combined with chicken, and mayo.
