Gas Safety
You know what they say, "Better safe than sorry"!
Safety is the main concern for every individual in every field. Be it in public, home or office. This is the reason there are police departments, fire brigades, etc. Before any of these become active, we ourselves have to be cautious and prevent any hazards. And especially at homes, where there are many devices that can cause harm to us and threaten our safety. Among the precautions we have to take at our home, cooking gas or LPG must be our priority. Gas spreads in a matter of seconds and causes a huge disaster; we really need to be careful while using our gas cylinders while cooking. And as majority of people in the city use gas for cooking we need to know the basics, if not everything, about gas safety. Here are some ways proposed by Nepal Oil Corporation you can take to make your homes safe from hazards caused by gas.
Precautions to take while changing the gas cylinders:
- Before plugging in the gas cylinder, make sure all the sources of fire like candles, incense, kerosene stoves, are off.
- Check whether the cap is properly sealed before buying a gas cylinder.
- The rubber pipes and regulators must be changed every 2 years.
- Turn the gas burner on to check if the connection from the regulator is ok.
Precautions to take while using the gas cylinder:
- Regularly check the rubber pipe if there are any punctures or if the pipe is damaged. If it is damaged, change it immediately.
- If you use match sticks to light your burner, light the match stick first before turning on the knob of the burner.
- Safely keep the Safety Cap of the cylinder.
- Always keep the cylinder upright.
- Always use cotton aprons while cooking.
- Keep the cylinder in a well ventilated place.
- Never repair the cylinder or the gas stoves by yourselves. Always call trained personnel to repair them.
- When no it in use, always turn the regulator knob off.
Precautions to take if there is a leakage:
- Immediately turn the knob of the regulator and the gas burner off.
- Turn off all the flammable items like candles, incense, etc. immediately
- Do not turn off the electric appliances that are on and do not turn them on if they are off.
- Open all the doors and windows to make the rooms ventilated.
- If there is a leakage from the cylinder itself, put the Safety Cap on.
These tips help you prevent any safety related threats caused by gas. There are devices like Gas Sensors that alert you through your mobile phones or sound alarms if there is a leakage. If you are not close by the gas cylinders to smell the leakage, this device is very much useful to alert you about the leakage and you can take necessary steps to avoid any damages. In case you are not able to detect the leakage and fire breaks out, you can control them from spreading and causing a huge damage with fire extinguishers and smoke detectors. You must always keep fire extinguishers nearby places where you use the gas for cooking or any other purposes.
Gas sensors Gas sensors are easy to use liquefied petroleum gas sensor, suitable for sensing LPG concentrations in the air. These sensors have a high sensitivity and fast response time if the concentration of the gas in the air rises. It sounds the alarm and with the latest smart sensors you are notified via your smart phones about the leakage. Fire Extinguishers Fire extinguishers are active fire protection devices that to extinguish or control small fires in an emergency. These devices help control the fire from spreading and turning into a wildfire. Fire extinguishers mostly contain compressed carbon dioxide as agents that help extinguish fire. Fire extinguishers must be installed near areas fire is used for different purposes |
