- Can you share with us your journey of becoming a dancer after losing one leg? What motivated you to pursue dancing despite the physical challenges?
From a young age, I nurtured an intense passion for dance. However, being from a Brahmin background, my family did not support my aspirations in dance and singing. Born as a normal child, my life took an unexpected turn at the age of 12 when I was diagnosed with cancer that when I had to lose one of my legs. Consequently, I ventured to Bharatpur to pursue my education and immerse myself in the world of dance. Yet, even there, I faced demoralizing remarks, with people claiming that dancing with just one leg was an impossible feat. Undeterred by the discouragement, I sought solace in vocal lessons under the guidance of Guru Dhan Bahadur Gopali, who became my source of inspiration. With unwavering determination, I overcame numerous challenges and eventually achieved the remarkable feat of winning a gold medal. My unwavering commitment proved that passion and perseverance can triumph over physical limitations.
Along my journey, doubts and setbacks were constant companions. A guru even questioned my ability to continue dancing, citing the need for 32 specific qualities, deeming my amputation an obstacle. Nevertheless, I persistently practiced, often enduring physical discomfort, as I danced with my artificial legs. Driven by my unwavering spirit, I poured my heart and soul into every movement, refusing to succumb to adversity.
Embracing unwavering dedication and boundless enthusiasm, I continue to dance, defying the odds and proving that the human spirit knows no limits. Dancing allows me to express myself fully and fills my life with profound fulfillment. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the extraordinary power of imagination.
- How did you adapt your dance routines to accommodate your physical condition? Were there any specific techniques or modifications that helped you excel in your performances?
Dancing with just one leg is a tremendous challenge, not only for the dancer but also for the teacher. The teacher must adapt their teaching methods to cater to different levels of ability. Despite the difficulties, I refuse to use any external support while dancing, which can confuse the audience. My aim is to prove that there are no limits to what we can achieve. I have taken on exhilarating experiences like bungee jumping and paragliding, embracing a rule of dedicating myself fully to every endeavor. I prioritize focusing on one thing at a time, investing 100% effort, whether it's studying or working, to unleash my full potential.
- What role did your family play in supporting your passion for dance? Were there any specific moments or gestures that stood out to you?
Despite overcoming cancer, when I shared my aspiration to pursue a career in dance, my family dismissed it as mere frivolity. Only my brother, Nila Kantha Subedi, stood by my side, having benefited from my support during my 10-year tenure in Kathmandu. Unbeknownst to my family, I continued to dance in secret. It was not until BBC and Kantipur covered my story that they discovered my true passion. I owe my journey to the guidance of Guru Dhan Bahadur Gopali, who paved the way for me, and the encouragement of Guru Rabi Rana Magar, who urged me to take the stage. Now, my family feels a mixture of pride and remorse, realizing that they underestimated my commitment to dance. Witnessing my interviews, they regret not recognizing my genuine dedication earlier.
- How did you manage to overcome any initial doubts or fears about continuing with dancing and ramping after your amputation?
Honestly, I have never felt fear while performing because I believe that the stage is my own. For those precious 4 to 5 minutes, I worship it with my dance, fearlessly expressing myself. Each stage starts from zero, and it only rises when I step onto it. I keenly observe the audience and the nature of the program, adapting my performance accordingly. Every practice session and thought contributed to my desire to present the best version of myself on stage. I have even had the opportunity to showcase Charya dance in Korea, representing Nepal’s art in a foreign country.
- Can you share any stories or encounters where your performances have inspired others, especially those facing physical challenges of their own?
During my performances, I often witness an overwhelming response from the audience. Many approach me, embracing me with tears in their eyes, expressing their amazement at experiencing something they never expected. Whether it's fun dances, folk dances, or semi-classical pieces, I adapt to the audience, leaving them astounded and appreciative. People often inquire about the origins of my dances, and some even thank me for preserving our cultural heritage. I receive countless messages daily, where individuals share their loss of hope due to such incidents and how they get motivated looking at me not giving up. As a result, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to provide guidance and counsel, drawing from my own journey of motivation and resilience. I believe it is my duty to support those facing similar hardships and be a source of strength for them.
- What advice would you give to someone who has faced a similar situation and is hesitant to pursue their passion due to physical limitations?
In the realm of disabilities, there are various categories, including blindness, deafness, and mental disabilities. However, when it comes to physical disabilities, such as losing a limb, it shouldn't be perceived as a disadvantage or the end of everything. Instead, we must learn to live with and adapt to it. If everyone had one leg and a few had two legs, the two-legged individuals would be considered the odd ones. It's all about adjusting and embracing our circumstances. Rather than lamenting what's missing, we should focus on discovering what brings us comfort. It's all a matter of mindset—I can stand up for myself.
- How do you stay motivated and maintain a positive mindset during challenging times?
My father didn't want me to face the hardships of the world and be subjected to sympathetic looks. However, I fought against his wishes because I knew that exploring the world required embracing challenges. I chose to adopt a positive mindset, refraining from complaints. I firmly believed that it was up to me to make things happen and gradually overcame his concerns.
- How do you think your story can inspire and encourage families to support their loved ones in pursuing their dreams, regardless of any physical limitations they may have?
It is crucial for every family to understand that individuals with disabilities deserve equal opportunities like everyone else. Unfortunately, our society often perceives people with disabilities as incapable and encourages them to stay at home, fostering dependence. However, it is essential to provide them with education and empower them to live fulfilling lives. Mental disabilities pose even greater challenges, requiring constant support from family members. While my own family initially lacked support for my dance aspirations, they stood by me in other aspects. Society often discourages individuals with disabilities, claiming that venturing outside or pursuing their dreams will be difficult. Yet, it is the individual's determination and their family's unwavering support that can overcome these obstacles. Without family backing, the journey becomes significantly more arduous.
To all readers: Don't view our limitations as weaknesses, but rather uncover the opportunities they bring. Even if we lack certain abilities, there are strengths within us waiting to be utilized. For instance, those with a loss of one sense often develop heightened senses in other areas. Instead of dwelling on what we lack, let's focus on what we possess and transform it into our greatest strength.
