Cooking basics for your child
A kitchen is not only a place to cook but also a learning space for children. Cooking foods evoke the senses of touch, smell, feel, etc. which help children to learn.
You might be waiting for your child to grow up enough to cook food or maybe they have reached an age to be able to cook food. Getting them into the kitchen and doing work/cooking meals can be difficult in the beginning. I am sure some parents want their children to start learning basic cooking ideas, however, they have no idea where to start from. If you are someone who does not want their children to do “hard work” cooking and feel like they will just order food if you are not home, then please drop that mentality. Everyone has to know the basic cooking ideas or just enough to not starve, just enough to not have to order unhealthy/ expensive food from the restaurant. So, what can be the basic cooking skills? From where should you get your child started in the kitchen? Let’s have a look:
- The first step is to teach them the mechanics of gas stoves. This might sound very basic, but there are cases of accidents. Help them learn how to turn on/off the gas, manage the gas flame so that food would be edible without burning, turn the gas cylinder on/off, etc. Having a piece of knowledge about them will keep them safe from kitchen accidents.
- Most children find cooking delicious food difficult because they have no idea how many ingredients to put in. Some of them don’t even know the name of spices/ingredients, which is okay, they will learn. First of all, you have to help them learn about the names of ingredients and where they go. Spices play a key role to turn bland food into a magnificent one.
- After they know about the ingredients, they must have an idea of how much to put. In such a case, measuring cups can be a good help. With measuring cups, the taste of food can never go wrong and it will turn out to taste the same hundreds of times. Using measuring cups rather than eyeballing the ingredients always works.
- The rice might turn out better with the use of a pressure cooker than in a pan. Right? Your children must know the right use of utensils. If only they know what to cook with which utensil, then half of the work gets better.
- Cutlery items can be dangerous when one is just a newbie to the kitchen and chopping is the major part of kitchen/cooking. Hence, the right way to use them must be learned. The slicing of veggies, meats, or other ingredients like onion, garlic, ginger, tomatoes, can be tricky and should be used with full carefulness. No need to fear cutlery items if they know how to use them, they will be safe.
Everyone of the right age regardless of gender must know how to keep their stomach from growling like thunder. The knowledge of basic cooking ideas helps for a lifetime. maybe as a parent you must consider their age and teach them accordingly. However, making them familiar with the kitchen vibes is essential. So, how have you planned to teach your child basic cooking skills?
