Brand Exposure for Children: Is It Healthy?
A child should be taught to be happy in simpler things rather than demanding expensive and useless branded items.
My four-year old brother says “f” stands for Facebook and “m” stands for McDonald's. Preschoolers today recognize the logo of Pepsi, or Disney’s which has already colonized their brain. And whenever they see an apple they say “iPhone,” and giggle. Now think where in which direction we are heading.
A child will want to go inside shops in Durbarmarg instead of a random shop in NewRoad, and you we know why? It’s not that the clothes and other items available in Durbarmarg are necessarily good or of better quality. It is just that Durbarmarg has many high end shops. Ask any child and he will tell you the names of brands that you probably have not even heard of. The world is heading to such expensive and branded products that even kids now are not ready to compromise on their brand of a simple video game.
The question here is: is it acceptable? I personally would not buy my child a branded pant that would cost Rs.8,000 when I can get a similar quality one for Rs.1500. So, before you get your child into the habit thinking that branded items are better simply because they are higher priced, or make them brand conscious, it is important to teach them to adjust to any situation and make them comfortable in simple products. You should set some limitations before your kid gets out of your hand.
