Bara Recipe
Today, let’s learn to make Bara which is a very significant and popular appetizer in Newari culture to try at home.
If you enter the valley, especially amongst the Newar community, Bara is the classic appetizer. Bara holds significance symbolizing good-luck food, and on top of that, the making process is simple enough for you to try at home. Here is the recipe for you to make on your own.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of black lentils
- 1cup of moong lentils
- 2eggs, beaten
- 1tablespoon garlic, minced
- 1tablespoon ginger, minced
- 3green chilies, minced
- 1⁄2teaspoon turmeric
- 1⁄4teaspoon asafetida powder
- salt and pepper
- Oil
Method:
- Soak the lentils overnight in a large bowl and then rinse them thoroughly. Do rub the lentils between your palms to wash off the outer skin.
- Take a large blender and grind the soaked-washed lentils until it gets a thick-paste texture with the addition of little water.
- Now, transfer the paste into a large bowl to mix oil, minced garlic, ginger, green chilies, turmeric, asafetida, salt, and pepper.
- If you want to make Egg Bara, add the beaten egg to the paste and store it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours.
- To cook the Bara, heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a thick-bottomed tawa. Make sure the heat is on medium flame. Pour a little bit of lentil paste onto the Tawa and spread to give a preferred round shape.
- Cook the patties until golden brown on both sides and repeat with the remaining paste.
- The Egg Bara is ready to get served with chutney or meat curry.
- You can add toppings: egg, minced meat, etc as if you want.
