Pedaling for a Purpose- Environmental Activism Across Malaysia
Gyan Maharjan, an environmentalist advocating for environmental concerns who is also an enthusiast cyclist, is on yet another exciting adventure throughout Malaysia. He took a stand amid the busy metropolis of Kathmandu and gazed at the mystical mountains
Chapter: Assembling the Dream
This I attempted from Kuala Lumpur Capital of Malaysia. Once there, I packed my bicycle, unpacked it, and assembled all the parts, which was a challenging task in and of itself. At night, taxis would transport me to my destinations, requiring me to do a lot of tapping. While traveling, I got lost because, when I asked a Nepalese restaurant staff member, I was informed that Batu Caves could be reached easily. It took me roughly 1 to 2 hours to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Batu Caves. While in the cycle lane, there was no issue; however, in the main lane, I became confused, so I decided from left hand side, it was a silent way and Google Track didn’t even help and I was lost and I came back at late night
Chapter II: Battling the Elements
As dawn broke over Kuala Lumpur, I set out once more, braving the relentless heat and humidity that hung heavy in the air. But with each passing hour, the harsh Malaysian climate took its toll, leaving me itching and uncomfortable. Despite my best efforts, the hard water of Malaysia only exacerbated my discomfort, leaving me longing for relief. In my quest to alleviate the itching and heat rash caused by Malaysia's harsh climate, I encountered a hurdle: obtaining medication required a prescription. Navigating the local healthcare system, I sought out a doctor who provided the necessary prescription. With patience and persistence, I obtained the prescribed medication, allowing me to overcome my discomfort and continue my journey with renewed resolve.
Chapter III: Encounters Along the Way
When heading towards Penang from Kuala Lumpur I had friends in Penang and I was invited there but the rumors that while traveling by cycle from Penang to other cities the highways are at risk of attacks and tricks so I thought to pack the cycle for the way but the box used before was already torn apart and finding another was very difficult as some boxes where small and the vehicles were also small so I took indrive and traveled 100 km and at one Chinese shop I found it and packed it also continued my journey. This made me feel so bad inside as I readied myself to overcome whatever lay on my way next.
As I prepared to depart for Penang, I couldn't shake off a sense of unease. Stories of untrustworthy drivers taking advantage of unsuspecting travelers by taking longer routes and charging exorbitant fees weighed heavily on my mind. Aware of the risks, I resolved to remain vigilant throughout my journey. With my bicycle securely packed and ready for transport, I hailed a taxi to take me to my next destination. Despite my apprehension, I couldn't afford to let fear hold me back. As we embarked on the journey, I kept a close eye on the route, cross-referencing it with maps on my phone to ensure we stayed on course. Throughout the ride, I remained alert, ready to challenge any deviations from the agreed-upon route. Though the journey was fraught with tension, I arrived safely at my destination, relieved to have overcome yet another obstacle on my journey.
Chapter IV: The Purpose
Despite the challenges that lay in my path, my journey through Malaysia was not without its moments of inspiration and opportunity. Collaborating with local organizations, I give my voice to environmental protection campaigns and fundraising efforts for children's causes. Each encounter, whether with fellow cyclists or community leaders, reaffirmed my belief in the power of collective action and positive change.
In the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, I found camaraderie in unexpected places. A chance encounter with a Nepalese waiter led to a friendship forged amidst the chaos of daily life. As we shared meals and stories, he shared tales of his heroic efforts to help his fellow Nepalese navigate the challenges of life in a foreign land. But our peaceful morning was shattered when young police officers descended upon us, demanding to see the passports of all Nepalese residents in the area. Fearing the worst, I made a hasty retreat, seeking refuge in the anonymity of the city streets.
Despite the obstacles I faced, my commitment to environmental activism remained unwavering. Collaborating with local organizations, I raised awareness about the importance of protecting our planet and preserving its natural beauty. My efforts even took me to the iconic Petronas Tower, where I proudly displayed a banner promoting global awareness and environmental conservation. Though my intentions were noble, I soon discovered that bureaucracy knows no bounds, as officials informed me that such displays were prohibited. Undeterred, I pressed on, finding solace in the opportunity to attend a fundraising event hosted by the Rotary Club.
Chapter V: New project
As I embarked on the sixth phase of my world cycle tour, I felt a deep sense of purpose driving me forward. The project, titled "Save the Himalaya," is a multifaceted initiative that seeks to address the pressing environmental challenges facing the Himalayan region, particularly in Nepal. At its core, the project revolves around two key components: t-shirt sales for awareness and involvement in tree plantation. I look forward to championing climate activism and environmental conservation efforts in the days and weeks to come.
The "Save the Himalaya" project involves selling specially designed t-shirts priced at $30 each, with $25 from each sale allocated to fund tree plantation initiatives led by the K Garney Foundation. The remaining $5 covers administrative expenses. T-shirts are distributed through various channels, including online platforms and local partnerships.
As the project gains momentum, I am hopeful that it will inspire others to take action and join the fight to protect the Himalayas. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the awe-inspiring beauty of this majestic mountain range for years to come.
